Fung, Victor K.

Dr. Victor K Fung is the Group Chairman of the Fung group  (www.funggroup.com) of companies, which comprises major subsidiaries in trading, logistics, distribution and retailing, including publicly listed Li & Fung Limited, Convenience Retail Asia Limited and Trinity Limited.He also is the Founding Chairman of the Fung Global Institute, an independent and non-profit think-tank that generates and disseminates innovative thinking and business-relevant research on global issues from Asian perspectives.

Dr. Fung holds a number of civic and professional appointments. He is Chairman of the Greater Pearl River Delta Business Council. He is also a member of the Commission on Strategic Development of the Hong Kong Government. From 1991 to 2000, Dr. Fung was Chairman of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, from 1996 to 2003, he was the Hong Kong representative on the APEC Business Advisory Council, from 1999 to 2008, Chairman of the Airport Authority Hong Kong and from 2001 to 2009, Chairman of the Council of The University of Hong Kong.

On the Chinese Mainland, Dr. Fung is a member of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, Vice Chairman of China Centre for International Economic Exchanges and a member of the International Business Leaders Advisory Council for the Mayor of Beijing, and an economic advisor to the People’s Government of Nanjing. He also is an Honorary Trustee of Peking University, a member of the Advisory Board of the School of Economics and Management of Tsinghua University and an Honorary Professor of Renmin University.

Dr. Fung is Honorary Chairman of International Chamber of Commerce headquartered in Paris and Chairman of Asia Advisory Board of Prudential Financial, Inc (USA). He is a member of the WTO Panel on Defining the Future of Trade.  He is also an independent non-executive Director of Baosteel Group Corporation and China Petrochemical Corporation (People’s Republic of China), Bank of China (Hong Kong) Limited and Chow Tai Fook Jewellery Group Limited (Hong Kong), and Koc Holding A. S. (Turkey).

Dr. Fung was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 1993 in recognition for his commitment to public service. In 1995, he was voted Businessman of the Year under the Hong Kong Business Awards Scheme for his success as an entrepreneur and for his contribution to Hong Kong’s economic development. He also was chosen Hong Kong Leader of the Year in 1998 and was named by Business
Week as one of the 50 Asian leaders leading the region out of economic turmoil.

In 2001, he was awarded the Harvard Medal for outstanding service to Harvard University. In 2003, the Hong Kong Government awarded Dr. Fung the Gold Bauhinia Star and the Grand Bauhinia Medal in 2010 for his distinguished service to the Hong Kong community. In 2011, he was awarded the MIT Sloan Dean’s Award for Excellence in Leadership.

In 1997, 2008 and 2010, The University of Hong Kong, The Chinese University of Hong Kong and Lingnan University respectively conferred upon Dr. Fung Honorary Doctorate Degrees of Laws. He was conferred Honorary Doctorate Degree of Business Administration by Hong Kong Baptist University in 2000 and The Open University of Hong Kong in 2002.

Born and raised in Hong Kong, Dr. Fung holds Bachelor and Master Degrees in Electrical Engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and a Doctorate in Business Economics from Harvard University. He also taught as a professor at Harvard Business School for four years before returning to Hong Kong in 1976. Dr. Fung is married with three children.
